The master plan is laid out to convey a medina atmosphere, synthesizing various building types into a harmonious whole. This synthesis creates a sense of community and cohesion. Small scale plazas and patios create a dense labyrinth of pedestrian areas which provide intimate spaces for relaxation and interaction.
Earthquake Housing
This project addresses the need for emergency housing in remote areas affected by the 2023 Al Haouz earthquake. The goal is to provide structures that serve as an intermediate solution between emergency tents and permanent housing. The dwellings consist of prefabricated foam panels, a material chosen for its versatility and efficiency. This method allows for the quick construction of various building types, catering to the diverse needs of the inhabitants.
Dar Hudhud
Situated within a small wedge-shaped parcel of land, this guest house unfolds in a meandering layout, making good use of the challenging site. The house harmoniously blends with the neighbors due to its form and use of local construction materials.
Hotel Zarzur
An abandoned riad lies hidden in a labyrinth of narrow streets and winding stairways of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. This proposed renovation makes the most of the tight confines of the cliffside terrain and dense urban fabric of the medina. The challenge of conveying a sense of luxury within such a limited footprint is achieved by incorporated a rich cascade of outdoor terraces, planters, and balconies, each offering a unique perspective of the surrounding countryside and the majestic Moulay Idriss Mausoleum.
Kasr Al Wadi Resort
This master plan responds to the challenges of a highly sloped site. The project features an organic, pedestrian-friendly layout with moderately inclined streets and walkways ensuring ease of movement and accessibility. Despite the large program, it maintains a sense of intimacy and community, reminiscent of local villages. The design fully leverages panoramic views of the agricultural valley below, offering a serene environment for resort guests.
Villa des Oliviers
This most prominent design feature in this project is the large overhanging roof, which is designed to provide shade, natural lighting, and ventilation, creating an indoor environment that is both comfortable and energy-efficient. The house is placed for optimal solar orientation, maximizing the benefits of sunlight throughout the day.
Starbucks
A359 has implemented over 50 Starbucks cafes and kiosks located in Macy’s retail locations. A359 works with fast-tracked and compressed schedules for rapid implementation. These project require the existing building infrastructure and local code requirements to be quickly evaluated and documented.
The 1819 Innovation Hub at UC
Once slated for demolition, a 1920s-era Sears, Roebuck & Co. store is now the front door of Cincinnati’s innovation corridor. Located off campus along a future “technology corridor” and in an urban renewal zone, the university saw the potential for this building to become a strong asset for the University and a catalyst to jump-start the innovation corridor development.
Riad Residence
This private riad nestled within the seaside medina of Sale overcomes the challenges of a small footprint and limited number of windows allowed by stringent zoning rules. The nucleus of this home is a flowing vertical stair winding up a glass covered patio. A Corbusier inspired diagonal mezzanine creates a sense of spaciousness on the ground floor, while reclaimed antique doors and windows add a touch of historical charm.
Villa in Marrakech
This project originates from the reuse of an old adobe brick farmhouse. The taller portion of the farmhouse now serves as a monumental entrance vestibule. The old exterior walls, due to their massive construction, provide excellent thermal comfort, maintaining a pleasant interior temperature regardless of the season.
Macy's
A359 provided architecture services for a new Macy’s department store in Downtown Summerlin, located in the Western outskirts of Las Vegas, NV. The Macy’s project included a prototype adaptation of a 180,000-square-foot design that would serve as an anchor store for this open-air lifestyle and entertainment center.
The Empower OTR Building
The Marketer is the headquarters of Empower, a creative multi-media agency in Cincinnati. It is also a story of an urban infill building in the heart of Cincinnati’s historic OTR neighborhood. 3CDC commissioned A359 to design, restore and integrate the historic Hukon building with a new four-story contemporary office block on the adjacent vacant lot.
